Nothing ever happens
in Hamilton, NY until 1955.
On a dark and a stormy
night, Abigail, age 9, hears a train wreck and her Nancy Drew instincts begin
circling her head. Where was it? Is anyone hurt? Who caused it?
Her friend, Nathan
plan to solve this problem. They have a lot of suspects: Mr. Stanley, who
worked for the railroad, Billy Wilcox who knows trains frontwards and back, and
local college kids.
Abigail and Nathan
discover the Nestle Chocolate Company investigated the train wreck and due to
weather conditions, Philip Lawson, a rep. for the company, allowed the people
of Hamilton to have as much chocolate as they desired. Their town smelled of chocolate for over six
months. They will have plenty of cookies to make in the future. All twenty tons
of chocolate were gone in a few days before the bees started swarming.
Meanwhile, her father
makes chocolate chip cookies, but they don’t taste as good as mothers. Abigail
pinkie swore never to share mother’s recipe. She knew something was missing. No
matter how he tried, the cookies didn’t taste good.
This is not
the first book of Donna Martin’s history mysteries, and it definitely isn’t the
last. She includes so much at the end of the book: the real and famous
chocolate chip recipe, a word search puzzle, facts of the accident, discussion
questions, bibliography and much more!
